5S Process will have maximum impact when implemented in conjunction with initiatives such as TQM, TPM, JIT, ISO 9000. The term “5S” is derived from five Japanese words that refer to cleanliness, order, and discipline. 5S concepts can make a very positive impression in your workplace — and in your financial statements. 5S can be a valuable contributor to a company’s “lean” productivity system. Hiroyuki Hirano’s classic, Five Pillars of the Visual Workplace (Productivity Press), describes the benefits that 5S has delivered for workers:
